#ACGME2027 Clinician Educator Full-Day Course: Professionalism Challenges in the Clinical Environment

November 5, 2026

To kick off this year’s conference for clinician educators, the ACGME will present a Full-Day Course to help participants strengthen practical skills for fostering professionalism and navigating challenges in the clinical learning environment.

Who Should Attend?
This Full-Day Course is designed for frontline educators and program leaders who work directly with or who supervise learners experiencing professionalism challenges. Educators at all experience levels will gain valuable insights.

What Will You Take Away?
Professionalism concerns are among the most common and challenging issues faced by medical educators. Participants will learn practical frameworks to recognize and categorize concerns, explore the underlying factors that may contribute to learner behavior issues, engage in effective coaching and feedback conversations, and intervene skillfully when professionalism conflicts arise in the workplace.

The course emphasizes early intervention, curiosity, and context-informed approaches that promote learner growth while supporting professional standards.

What Will the Full-Day Course Look Like?

Recognizing and Exploring Professionalism Concerns in the Clinical Environment
Participants will explore common cognitive biases that influence educator responses, examine when concerns warrant intervention, and learn strategies for gathering information and responding fairly to concerns reported by others.

Supporting Behavior Change Through Coaching
Participants will examine approaches to disruptive and disengaged learners, discuss common barriers to learner engagement, and review factors associated with successful behavior change.

Feedback Conversations that Promote Relationship and Growth While Reinforcing Standards for Professional Behavior
This interactive session will introduce practical feedback frameworks and provide opportunities for participants to practice responding to common learner reactions.

Responding to Professionalism Concerns in Real Time
Using Forum Theatre principles, participants will engage with realistic interactive scenarios that mirror common professionalism challenges.

From Observation to Action: A Practical Framework for Frontline Educators
Participants will synthesize the day’s learning into a practical framework for responding to professionalism concerns.
